The 1856 Sydney half-sovereign with Type 2 Reverse is an extremely rare coin design, with around 12 examples known to be in private hands in 2016. There are two main hypotheses as to how the coin came into existence. One theory is pragmatism of the Sydney Mint: the Mint was short on working dies and used a pattern die from 1853 to make up the difference. The second theory is the complete opposite: a pattern die accidentally mixed in with working dies, and thus a few coins were muled with this unique reverse. Regardless of how it was created, this 1856 Sydney half-sovereign remains a highly rare and collectable coin in any grade.
