BRITISH WEST INDIES. AR anchor quarter. 6.62 gm. 25 mm. Minted in London. 1822. British arms; GEORGIUS IV D G BRITANNIARUM REX FD / A crowned anchor; COLONIAR BRITAN MONET. Pridmore 10. KM 3. Very Fine.
This series was issued in response to British colonies requesting smaller change in places where the Spanish 8 reales was the main currency. Change made with Spanish dollars required cutting an 8 reale piece into "bits." The anchor series, a 16th, an 8th, a quarter and a half corresponded to the Spanish dollar standard but simplified trade. Requested late in the reign of George III, they were issued in 1820 and again in 1822.
