GREAT BRITAIN. The "OLD PRICE RIOTS." White metal medal. 31.27 gm. 42 mm. Possibly by P. Wyon. 1809. A large P inside an O (OP) on top of a trumpet decorated with laurel branches; GOD SAVE THE KING around above, MAY OUR RIGHTS & PRIVILEGES REMAIN UNCHANGED in small letters below / A man seated on an ass with the face of Kemble (actor-manager) as Shylock; he is waving pennants OLD PRICES and OPEN BOXES; FROM N. TO O. JACK YOU MUST GO around above. BHM 678 (R). Eimer 1005. Extremely Fine detail; a bit banged up (these also show up holed) but an attractive and remarkable cartoon in metal reflecting public indignation.

All this was about John Kemble raising ticket prices with the reopening of Covent Garden in 1809. John Bull was the 18th century personification of a typical Englishman as an honest businessman or farmer who upheld traditional values.
