PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter. As satrap (323-305/4 B.C.) or king (305/4-282 B.C.) AR tetradrachm. 15.52 gm. 29 mm. First reduced Ptolemaic standard. In the name of Alexander III 'the Great' of Macedon. Alexandreia mint. Struck circa 306-300 B.C. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing elephant skin, aegis around neck with tiny Δ in scales; uncertain circular countermark behind / Athena Alkidemos advancing right, holding shield and brandishing spear; monogram to inner left; two monograms and eagle standing right on thunderbolt to right. CPE 59. Svoronos 146. Zervos Issue 22. SNG Copenhagen 18. Very Fine; attractively toned, with traces of iridescence in devices; good style, well centered on a full round flan; short minor flan crack at 6'; tiny central flan flaw, small area of roughness, and several very light hairline scratches on reverse; countermark on obverse impressed forcefully enough to create small raised area in reverse field.
