FRANCE: Louis XIV, 1643-1715, AR ¼ écu aux 8 L, 1691-O, KM-270.10, Gadoury-150, Riom Mint issue, struck over earlier ¼ écu, with old reverse legend showing through new obverse legend, somewhat uneven, though attractive tone, VF-EF, R2 (Gadoury). This issue was part of the coinage reform of December 1689. Changes of type were made in 1689, 1693, 1701, and 1704, with each one often overstruck on its predecessor and issued at an increased value. For instance, the 1689 écu aux 8 L's were issued at 66 sols, but replaced by the écu aux palmes in 1693 at 72 sols (Mayhew).
