ROMANIA: Carol I, as Domnitor, 1866-1881, AE medal, 1866, Buz. p.238, 40mm, bronze medal by Kullrich to commemorate the Church of St. John the Baptist funded by Mr. Ioan S. Grecescu in Turnu-Severin; bare head left of Carol // Romanian inscription in 11 lines, a few light carbon spots, PCGS graded Specimen 63. Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich (1821-1887) was a Prussian medalist and coin die cutter. In 1859 Kullrich was appointed to the Berlin Mint and cut the dies for the Prussian Kingdom coinage. After 1871 he created the first coins for the German Empire. Kullrich also made dies for Heinrich XIV of Reuss-Schleiz for the Vereinstaler from 1868 and the 20-mark piece from 1881 and these coins were struck at the Berlin mint.
