ARAGON: René of Anjou, claimant, 1466-1472, AV pacífic (3.26g), Barcelona, Cru.V.S.-925, facing crowned bust within multifoil, holding lis-tipped scepter on the left and globe on the right, + RENAT9 PRIM DEI GRA REX ARAGO // crowned coat-of-arms of Aragon within multifoil, strong VF, RR. First struck in 1465 during the Catalan Civil War (1462-1472), the pacífic was, to our knowledge, the first medieval European gold coin to feature a facing bust of the ruler since the Byzantine histamenon three centuries earlier. This new denomination was created at the impetus of Pedro, the Constable of Portugal, a cultured ruler (and a coin collector in his own right) who very much understood the propaganda value of a well-designed currency amid a civil war. The handsome coin turned out to be a success among the Catalans and was exchanged at well above its gold content, thus earning the pretender king important revenue for his flagging campaigns. Such was its popularity that after Pedro's premature death in 1466, both his successor, René, and his enemy, Juan II, placed their own facing busts on the coin. The latter eventually went on to name it the pacífic to commemorate the eventual pacification of Catalonia.
