VALIKACA: Anonymous, 1st century AD, AE unit (0.50g), Pieper-413 (this piece), Brahmi legend valiksha, uniface, unique, EF, RRR, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. The place name Valikaca is known from a Buddhist Stupa railing pillar, excavated by Sir Walter Elliot in Amaravati, AP, Guntur district. The Prakrit inscription at the site is written in Brahmi and reads "Gift of the grandson of the householder Papin, the Valikacaka and his wife Kanha" thus referring to an inhabitant of Valikaca (=Valikacaka). This coin is the first known numismatic evidence of the locality Valikaca, mentioned in the Amaravati pillar inscription (courtesy Wilfried Pieper).
