Rare 17th-century German "Coin Book," Includes Section on Ancient Roman & Jewish Coins
Arendt, B. MÜNTZ BUCH DARINNEN ZUBESEHEN DIE BESTEN UNND SCHÖNSTEN, SO WOL ALTE ALS NEWE GELT-MÜNTZE... Hamburg: Verlegung Berndt Arendts, 1631. 4to [21.5 by 16 cm], contemporary vellum; hand-lettered spine. Woodcut vignette of obverse and reverse of two coins at base of title page; (viii), 240, (8) pages, final pagination being a Register; pagination erratic between pages 57 and 61, as issued; illustrated throughout with woodcut illustrations of many hundreds of contemporary circulating and earlier coins, including ancient Jewish and Roman coins, all contained within woodcut borders. Minor spotting and general wear. Very good or better. A rare edition, with Dekesel listing only one copy. The book itself is an highly unusual example of the genre. While these were produced to enable merchants, treasurers, and others to identify a wide variety of circulating coins, this one begins with a 16-page section on the coins of antiquity (Insignia Numismata aliquot Imperatorum Veterum Romanorum), illustrating Roman types and ending with a page depicting both sides of three ancient Jewish coins. A fascinating volume, in a contemporary binding. Dekesel A57 (listing only a copy in the Vitterhetsakademiens Bibliotek in Stockholm). Engel & Serrure 199. Hirsch 12. Lipsius 14 & 271.
