The Charvet Collection
Hoffmann, H. COLLECTION CHARVET. MÉDAILLES, ANTIQUITÉS, SCEAUX-MATRICES. 7 mai 1883 et jours suivants. 4to, contemporary black cloth-backed mottled boards, gilt. Fine lithographic frontispiece portrait; iv, 180 pages; 1956 lots; text illustrations, some of them full-page; 8 additional plates of coins and antiquities, including engravings, phototypes, and lithographs, one tinted and folding [lacking one lithographic plate of coins]. Hand-priced throughout and annotated, giving numerous buyers' names and other information. Hand-written index. Near fine. A handsome and well-annotated copy of this important sale, the collection of Jules Charvet. Quite rare and well-illustrated. Several of the plates depict medals. Charvet was successfully sued for defamation in 1863 by Rollin & Feuardent for comments he made about them in the introduction to his 1862 Description de monnaies françaises, royales et féodales. By 1883, it seems, enough time had passed that Rollin was among the buyers at this sale. Babelon 226. Spring 390 [though lacking the lithographic plate partly depicting ancient coins].
