The Carfrae & Rothschild Collections, Priced & Named
Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge. CATALOGUE OF THE COLLECTION OF GREEK COINS IN GOLD, SILVER AND ELECTRUM, THE PROPERTY OF ROBERT CARFRAE, ESQ. F.S.A., SCOT. (OF EDINBURGH). London, 23–25 May 1894. (2), 61, (1) pages; 363 lots; 11 fine plates. Hand-priced and named in pencil, with occasional annotations throughout. [bound with] Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge. CATALOGUE OF THE COLLECTION OF GREEK COINS IN GOLD, SILVER, ELECTRUM AND BRONZE OF A LATE COLLECTOR. MANY SELECTED FROM THE FOLLOWING WELL-KNOWN COLLECTIONS: WIGAN, BOMPOIS, DE QUELEN, COMTE DE DUCHASTEL, BILLOIN, CARFRAE, THE EARL OF ASHBURNHAM, SIR EDWARD BUNBURY, MONTAGU, &C. London, 28–31 May 1900. (2), 67, (1) pages; 518 lots; 10 very fine autotype plates of coins. Hand-priced and named in pencil, with occasional annotations throughout. Two catalogues bound in one volume. 4to, contemporary green cloth, gilt. Both catalogues are worn, with occasional repairs to page or plate margins, and some wrinkling; complete. Spine cloth torn. Good or better. Two important sales. Both catalogues are well-used saleroom floor copies, worn from obvious repeated use, but of considerable interest for their annotations. Carfrae's exceptionally fine collection was formed over a period of thirty-five years. The coins were "selected chiefly for their fine preservation and high artistic merit from the following well-known collections: Wigan, San Georgio, Dupré, Lord Hastings, Sparkes, H. de la Salle, Paravey, Sambon, Bompois, De Quelen, Comte de Duchastel, Sim, Spratt, &c. &c." Clain-Stefanelli 1951. Grierson 281. Spring 758. The Rothschild collection was also exceptional. This example of the catalogue advances, through its careful recording of buyers, the pedigree chain to the next generation of collectors, i.e., Seltman, O'Hagan, Ready, Huth, and others whose names are little known today, along with the principal dealers of the day: Spink, Rollin, Chapman, Egger, Hamburger, Sambon, Merzbacher et al. The 518 lots realized an impressive total of £8686.18.6. Babelon 236. Clain-Stefanelli 1970. Grierson 284. Manville & Robertson 25. Spring 778.
