Attractive Volume on the Aes Grave of the Kircher Collection

Two volumes, bound in one. 4to, 19th-century red half morocco with marbled sides; spine with five raised bands, ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt; top page edges gilt; marbled endpapers. vii, (1), 120 pages; engraved title to plates; plate key; engraved map; 39 attractive double plates of aes grave engraved by Appolloni and sewn in on tabs. Binding worn, but sound, with cracking to joints. Occasional foxing. Very good. A charming early work on aes grave, comprising a detailed catalogue of the Kircher collection in Rome, written by the Jesuit Fathers Giuseppe Marchi and Pietro Tessieri. Very scarce. Leitzmann 85. Mommsen/Blacas cxiv–cxv: "Les PP. Marchi et Tessieri, auteurs de cet ouvrage, ont le mérite d'avoir été les premiers à mettre un certain ordre dans les monnaies qui appartiennent à l'aes grave, et surtout dans celles qui sont privées de légendes. Ils ont travaillé sur la collection du Collége Romain, la plus riche qui existe de toutes les collections de monnaies coulées." The engravings are quite attractive and are bound into this copy on tabs, presenting them to full effect. Ex G.N. Budzilovich Library, with his bookplate and stamp.
