Victoria (1837-1901), silver Halfcrown, 1845, 5 of date possibly struck over 3, young filleted head left, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, within laurel wreath, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: edge inscribed with incuse letters and star stops, 14.16g (cf.Bull 2723; cf.ESC 679A; cf.Davies 568; S.3888). Once cleaned, now lightly toning, a number of tiny nicks mainly on obverse, almost extremely fine and rare.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse "Queen of the Briton's, Defender of the Faith."

This coin exhibits what is typically thought of a the 5 over 3 variety, but to our eyes the 5 appears flawed with an infilled patch in the top half shearing across at a 45 degree angle from upper right to lower left interior of the top. The lower left loop of the five connects as a raised flaw to close the loop off with the upright above. This coin is nevertheless a die variety.
