JAPAN. Trade Dollar, Year 8 (1875). Osaka Mint. Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-61 Prooflike.
cf. KM-Y-14 (for regular issue); cf. JNDA-01-12 (same); cf. JC-09-12-1 (same). "Daido" (大桐) variety. Though at first appearance, the present specimen would seem to be a scarce but unassuming Trade Dollar, it is, in fact, an INCREDIBLE RARITY. A special subset of issues from years 8 and 9 exhibit very subtle differences upon their reverses--the most obvious of which is the presence of an additional bud at the outer top of the right-hand side of the wreath. Additionally, the paulownia and chrysanthemum at the central top of the reverse are slightly larger than on the general issue of Trade Dollars. Only about 20-30 of this special "large paulownia" type are known to exist, with the present example likely one of the finest--if not the finest--extant. Exceptionally prooflike and radiant, with a delightful argent nature and subtle frosting to the devices. A great opportunity for the advanced collector of Japanese rarities.
Estimate: $20000 - $40000
