CHINA. Gold 500 Yuan (5 Ounces), 1993. Peacock Series. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo.
Fr-64; KM-600. Mintage: 99; Serial # 12. Virtually as struck, this stunning low mintage type displays intense frost over the designs with fields that are without noticeable blemish. As such, an item that certainly qualifies as elite in the modern series, with few others that can match the rarity and popularity that the 500 Yuan issues from the Peacock series have. Sold with the original box and COA as well as a related book that discusses the peacock stamps of similar design.
Borrowing from Giuseppe Castiglione's (Lang Shih-ning) ink painting on silk scroll entitled Peacock Spreading its Tail Feathers that was made in 1758, this coin depicts two peacocks in a serene garden. The male, in the process of courting the female, has his plumage spread in a effort to showcase his vibrancy. Surrounding the peacocks are a magnolia, peony and cherry blossoms.
Estimate: $45000 - $55000
