CHINA. 16.5 Ounce Silver Vault Protector Medallic Issue, ND (1990). NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo.
KMX-Unlisted. Struck in the style of the Tang Dynasty. Edge at 6 o'clock engraved #202. Highly charming and pleasing, this large issue presents a subtle argent frosting and exceptional mirrored brilliance. With just one grading finer at NGC, a piece that undoubtedly will dazzle.

It is important to note that vault protectors hold a significant place in China's extensive numismatic history, being produced for more than 1,000 years. From the beginning, these issues were much larger, heavier, thicker, as well as being overall better made than the regular circulating Cash coinage. The sole purpose of these massive talismans was to be an offering for the God of Wealth and were hung with red silk and tassels in the mint's spirit hall. It was believed that they contained magical powers that would protect the mint while bringing fortune and wealth to the treasury. Typically, these were made to commemorate the opening of new casting furnaces to produce regular Cash coins.

Estimate: $1500 - $2500
