(t) CHINA. Silver Tael Pattern Restrike, CD (1906). Tientsin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63+.
L&M-16; K-934; KM-Pn300; WS-0021; Wenchao-85 (rarity four stars). An important RARITY from the empire period, this Tael-sized issue showcases the iconic coiled dragon motif on one side with an attractive woven pattern surrounding the Chinese and Manchu characters on the other. Better than most seen, this example is mostly white with sporadic instances of tone around the far edges. Under magnification, significant pebbling from die rust is observed in the fields, which confirms one of the diagnostics for this restrike issue.

A short-lived issue that, despite an imperial decree stating that Tael coinage and its subsidiaries were to prevail over the 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), never made its way into full production due to dissenting provinces and the emperor's death a month later. Still, the design was not completely abandoned, as it directly influenced the eventual standard design of the 1908 Dollar-denomination issues with only slight modifications to the character side.

From the Ta Han/MCC Collection.

Estimate: $80000 - $120000
