(t) CHINA. Silver "Mausoleum" Dollar Pattern, Year 16 (1927). PCGS AU-55.
L&M-85; K-609; Wenchao-pg. 555 #898 (rarity three stars); Sun-III-4-01; WS-0130. Mintage: 480. VERY RARE and heavily sought after. A sharply struck and attractive example of this always in demand and popular pattern Dollar exhibiting medium to dark toned surfaces. A highly desirable, low mintage and tough to locate pattern sure to be destined for an advanced collection of Chinese rarities.

Designed by Richard Placht, Austrian medalist and engraver for the Vienna mint. Although attractive and elegant in its design, the pattern was destined to be rejected. While stylistically correct, the "Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum" has several design errors. Since the engraver never actually saw the site (construction was still under way as this pattern was being designed), elements were omitted including the mausoleum steps leading to its face. It is also noted that the engraving of Dr. Sun Yat-sen was met with disapproval from authorities in China, as it did not particularly resemble him.

Estimate: $15000 - $25000
