CHINA. Silver "American Design" Dollar Pattern, Year 18 (1929). Hangchow Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.
L&M-95; K-616; KM-Pn100; WS-0139. The ever-popular and EXCEPTIONALLY RARE "American" design for the Sun Yat-sen Dollar, with dies emanating from the Philadelphia Mint but struck in China at the Hangchow Mint. Highly brilliant and radiant, with great luster and only light toning. A few ery minor, scattered marks are noted, as well as some subtle die polishing, but immensely attractive and alluring nonetheless, and off the market for the last 30 years, with its most recent appearance at auction being in the fabled Goodman collection.
In 1929, the Chinese Ministry of Finance ordered a new design for the then proposed Dr. Sun Yat-sen Dollar. Patterns were submitted from the world's five leading mints: Italy, Japan, England, United States and Austria. Upon completion, the various mints shipped the dies as well as samples of the new patterns to China.
From the Stephen K. Scher Collection. Ex: Irving Goodman Collection (Superior - 6/1991) Lot # 889 @ $1,210 total.
Estimate: $50000 - $70000
