CHINA. Dollar, Year 10 (1921). PCGS MS-64.
L&M-864; K-676; WS-0101. Reeded edge variety. Tied for fifth finest certified with 15 other examples on the PCGS population report, 18 finer (MS 64+[4], MS 65[7], MS 65+[5] and MS 66[2]). Obverse: President Hsu Shih Chang in formal attire facing slightly left; Reverse: Pavilion at Peking Union Medical College Hospital with legend at the bottom. A highly attractive representative of the type displaying beautiful mottled delicate patina over the lustrous surfaces with much brilliance that catches the eye. Though not the finest certified, this is a pleasing example offering much originality that is destined for a fine collection.
An incredibly popular and desirable type believed to have been a pattern issue, it now appears that these were, in fact, more medallic in nature, and meant to be given out upon the opening of the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC). Initially designed with a blank field below the pavilion for recipients' names to be engraved, the design was altered to contain the three struck characters instead, as the engraving proved difficult on the initial batch.
From the Hobart Collection.
Estimate: $40000 - $60000
