(t) CHINA. Fantasy "Empress Long Yu" Gold Dollar, CD ("1885"). PCGS MS-61.
K-B14; KMX-191; cf. WS-1349-10 (silver). Tied with just one other example as the only gold examples certified by PCGS, this enchanting issue presents alluring quality and a bit of a mystery. Traditionally referred to as the "Long Yu" type, this fantasy begs the question as to whom she was. This type undoubtedly pairs with the corresponding male version (with dragon on the reverse, in contrast to this type's peacock, indicating a marriage connection), given as Kuang-hsu. It may be more likely that this is intended to be the Empress Dowager Cixi, who chose Kuang-Hsu's successor, Puyi, with these fantasies being more related to the ultimate Qing dynast rather than the penultimate. In any event, VERY RARE and desirable, with the Pinnacle specimen realizing a total of $108,000 in our April 2021 auction (lot # 50018).
Estimate: $30000 - $50000
