CHINA. Chang Hsun First Class Gilt Medal, Year 1 (1912). PCGS Genuine--Corrosion Removed, AU Details.
cf. L&M-938; cf. KMX-520. Plain Edge. Obverse: 3/4 facing bust of General Chang Hsun in military uniform; "Giorgi" signature at lower right; Reverse: Crossed flags with Chinese characters above and below. A RARE first-class medal of this Luigi Giorgi designed type that was presumably struck in silver and gilt at a later time. While the aforementioned corrosion removal is not immediately evident in the holder, several thin scratches in the left obverse field are worthy of note.

This medal exists in first, second and third classes, varying in the legend at the bottom of the reverse. Some silver examples had the reverse legend effaced for unknown reasons (see KMX-528). Our last offering of the first class medal was in silver (SBP HK, April 2018, lot 50442).

From the Stephen K. Scher Collection.

Ex: Irving Goodman Collection (Superior 6/1991) Lot # 1492.

Estimate: $1000 - $3000
