(t) CHINA. Chekiang. 3 Mace 6 Candareens (50 Cents), ND (1898-99). PCGS AU-55.
L&M-283; K-120; KM-Y-54; WS-1020; Wenchao-pg. 394#589 (rarity three stars). Fiery pearl with seven flames, tail ends in seven spines. A VERY RARE and popular issue that seldom appears on the market. Just the faintest trace of wear primarily contained to the high points and exposed areas. The surfaces display lovely rich dusky hued patina with a slight iridescent sheen that complement the design features offering a pleasing appearance. This gently handled survivor boasts much originality with great eye appeal that is sure to be a welcome highlight to many collections.

It is interesting to note that dragon side appears to be struck from one of the dies produced by Otto Beh Company in Esslingen, Germany for the 1897 issues. Though the legends show evidence of being touched up there is no mistake that the central design elements such as the dragon and clouds as well as the stops in the legend and digits, "3" and "6", in the denomination were produced by the Germany company. The reverse on the other hand is somewhat of an enigma, stylistically speaking the Wei Stele style calligraphy is vastly different and quite distinct found only on the 1899 issues from this mint.

Estimate: $10000 - $15000
