PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details, C/M - XF Details.
KM-129; Basso-56; PNM#6-133; PNM#16-298; PNM#21-VIII-112; Cacho-IX-CS-058; Gil-5-4-3-III. Type VI countermark; crowned Y.II. within circular indent. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (By Decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1831-Go MJ Mexico republic 8 Reales; Straight "J" variety. A somewhat SCARCE date from this mint, we have only six recorded examples with two different crown varieties. The countermark is slightly uneven, though the pertinent details are clear on a nicely preserved host. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now subdued displaying golden gray tone with areas of richer coloration. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example with a good look sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters.
Estimate: $400 - $600
