Crispus, Caesar, 316-326. Follis (Bronze, 18.5 mm, 2.60 g, 12 h), Arelate, S = 2nd officina, c. 324-326. CRISPVS NOB CAES Laureate head of Cripus to right. Rev. PROVIDENTIAE AVGG / S(crescent)AR Camp-gate surmounted by two turrets; above, star. RIC -. Unpublished. Areas of striking weakness, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Berliner collection, formed between 1970s and early 2000s.

The mintmark S(crescent)AR is only documented in RIC as an irregular issue struck in 327, but it is in the name of Constantine I and has a camp-gate reverse combined with the legend VIRTVS AVGG (cf. RIC p. 268, 313, note). Here we have the same mintmark, but unlike the examples noted in RIC, it is used on a coin of Crispus which is muled with a reverse of Constantine I having the legend PROVIENTIAE AVGG. There are other known mules combining PROVIDENTIAE AVGG reverses with various Caesars, as well as mules with PROVIDENTIAE CAESS reverses combined with Constantine I obverses, but all are extremely rare. In fact, this is only the second example this cataloguer has seen in 25 years of actively searching for them.
