Archepolis was the son of Themistokles, one of the greatest Athenian statesmen and generals of the first half of the 5th century. He was later ostracized and fled to Ionia where, by order of the Persian king, he was made governor of Magnesia. Themistokles struck a small series of silver fractions, and when his son Archepolis succeeded him as governor around 459, he did likewise.
