France, French State (1940‑43), aluminium 1 Franc, 1943, head of the Marianne left. Rev. Value and date between cornucopiae, engraver: Pierre Alexandre Morlon, 1.30g (Gad. 472a; KM 885a.1). Fair to Fine, significant wear and discoloration to the surfaces. £500‑1,000 For this lighter weight issue in aluminium, in Gadoury's Monnaies Francaises 1789‑2013, it is stated that only 55 examples were struck in weight of 1.3‑1.4g, while for 1.8g version a mintage of 4,400 pieces is stated for this year. These coins were struck for colonial use in Africa. The other heavier version was struck in zinc and it is normally about 4.2‑4.8g in weight. The issue of this coin was authorized by the French government during its period of exile in London, only a handful are in existence today, and it is so scarce that some consider it to be the greatest French rarity since the Napoleonic period.
