Alfred the Great (871-899), King of Wessex, Penny, moneyer Wulfred, small cross pattee within linear
circle, legend surrounding in three parts, +ΛEL FRE DREX•. Rev, moneyer name in two horizontal
lines, divided across centre by three pellets, pellet above and below, reads VVLF/RED+, 1.55g (S.1067;
N.639 : Type III; SCBI 26 [East Anglia], 115). Struck on a full flan, outer toothed borders visible, light grey
toning with underlying mint brilliance, few peckmarks both sides. Some die breaks and metal stress striation
markings all from the initial strike, a rarer type with the pellet after X, legends legible. Good very fine, scarce. A
great example of the Guthram type.
