A Great War Royal Naval Reserve Trawler Casualty Group awarded to Second Hand Michael Palmer,
His Majesty's Trawler Hawk, who was Killed in Action on the 17th of February 1917 when H.M.T.
Hawk was torpedoed by U-64 comprising 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals (943S.A. M.
Palmer. 2 Hd. R.N.R.), Memorial Plaque (Michael Palmer), mounted for wear, very fine. (3) £220-£260
Michael Palmer, a fisherman from Grimsby, joined the Royal Naval Reserve on the 25th of January
1915, rated as 2nd Hand and Mobilised Before Training. He served aboard 5 vessels before being posted
as 2nd Hand to His Majesty's Trawler Hawk. H.M.T. Hawk rammed and sank U‑14 off Peterhead on the
17th of February 1917. H.M.T. Hawk was torpedoed by the very successful U-Boat, U-64, Kapitanleutnant
Robert Moraht, on the 17th of February 1917, 140 miles east by south of Malta, Hawk was sunk with the
loss of 7 lives. At the time of her sinking Hawk had just rescued the crew of SS Okermont who had also
just been torpedoed by U-64.
U-64 completed 10 patrols before being sunk on the 17th of June 1918, with the loss of 38 killed and 5
captured, by depth charges fired from H.M.S. Lyching. U-64 had sunk 45 ships, damaged 3 and captured
1, She had torpedoed and sunk the French semi‑dreadnought battleship Danton.
2nd Hand Palmer is commemorated on panel 25 of the Chatham Memorial, sold with Commonwealth
War Graves Commission details and copy service paper, Memorial plaque in contemporary wooden
frame sold with a Liverpool Pals Sweetheart broch.
