A Great War Grenadier Guards Casualty Pair awarded to Private Arthur William Ess, 1st Batt alion
Grenadier Guards, who was wounded on the 22nd of July 1917, Shrapnel Wound Left Leg and Face,
Gun Shot Wound Left Knee comprising, 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (22841 Pte. A. W.
Ess. G. Gds.), toned very fi ne. £30-£50
Arthur William Ess enlisted for The Grenadier Guards at the Depot of the Norfolk Regiment on the
8th of February 1915, stating that he lived in Mill Road, West Walton, Near Wisbech Cambridgeshire,
that he was 19 years and 2 months old and was a Farm Servant by trade. He was posted to the Depot
on the day he att ested he was posted to the 1st Batt alion and arrived in France on the 14th of April
1916. Appointed Lance corporal on the 4th of September 1916. He reverted to Private on the 14th of
December 1916 after he was reported for neglect of duty as an NCO for losing two pairs of Gum Boots.
On the 7th of March he was tried on two counts. Idle on Sentry Duty 7th of March 1917, Leaving an
Advanced Listening Post between the hours of 11pm and 12 midnight, for this he was awarded 28 Days
Field Punishment No.1.
On the 22nd of July 1917, he was wounded - Shrapnel Wound Left Leg and Face, Gun Shot Wound
Left Knee, he was to Field Ambulance 66 and on the 14th of August was returned Home to the Military
Hospital Boscombe to recover from his wounds. He returned to France on the 17th of April 1918 and
returned to England once more on the 9th of June 1918 when he was posted to the 5th Batt alion. He was
Demobilised to the Z Reserve on the 23rd of March 1919.
