India Medal 1895-1902, QVR, two clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Relief of Chitral 1895, awarded to
Private Albert James Marchant, 1st Batt alion East Kent Regiment, (4128 Pte A. J. Marchant 1st Bn East
Kent Regt.), suspension slack, otherwise very fi ne. £160-£180
Albert James Marchant, a native of Maidstone, Kent att ested for the East Kent Regiment at Canterbury
on the 17th of January 1893, he stated he was 18 years and two months old and was by trade a Porter. He
served Home from the 17th of January 1893 to the 7th December 1894, India, the 8th of December 1894
to the 25th of February 1902, Home 26th of February 1902 to the 1st of June 1905, South Africa the 2nd
of June 1905 to the 26th of October 1908, Hong Kong the 27th of October 1908 to the 4th of December
1910, Singapore the 5th of December 1910 to the 1st of February 1913, India the 2nd of February 1913 to
the 30th of January 1914, and Home from the 31st January 1914 to the 6th February 1914 when he was
discharged having served 21 years 31 days with the Colours.
He was promoted to Corporal in 1899 but was reduced to the ranks by District Courts Martial in 1902.
He was discharged as a Lance Corporal. His papers state an injured knee, this listed under wounds but
not dated. His apers confi rm that he was part of the Chitral Relief Force and expeditions on the North
West Frontier 1897-98. His papers also confi rm the award of the India Medal with two clasps.
