Eadgar (959‐975), Penny, Two‐line type, York mint, moneyer Heriger, small cross pattée, legend
surrounding, + E•Λ•DG•Λ•R REX. Rev, three cross pattées across centre, moneyer name in two lines,
trio of pellets below and a group of four above, HERIG/ ERMO, contraction bar above M, H&E ligate,
1.30g (S.1129; N.741; HT NE V; CTCE. 79, Plate 17; SCBI 6 [Edinburgh], 428‐451). Darkly toned with
underlying golden lustre, struck on a broad flan with the outer toothed borders visible both sides. Legends legible,
free from any surface markings, slightest of softness on the last R of King's name. Reverse bold and concise, much
as struck, with a four pellet variation above moneyers name. Heriger one of the three moneyers associated with the
York issues, the others being Durand and Aesculf, well provenanced in Tetney. About or near extremely fine for
type, scarce with the variation of pellets above moneyers name.
