Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, First hand type (c.979-985), London mint, moneyer Eadweald, inner
linear circles both sides. Diademed bust right, legend surrounds +ÆĐELRED REX ΛNGLOX. Rev,
hand of providence issuing from clouds Λ (alpha) and W (omega) figure 1, flanking either side, reads
+EΛDPOLD M‐O LVNDO, 1.44g (S.1144; N.766; BMC IIa; BEH.144; SCBI ‐). A scarcer moneyer for mint
and type, with a handful appearing at auction. Darkly toned with a clear yet softly struck portrait, legends legible.
Reverse, the hand of providence motif concise with a full moneyer mint script. Gradually becoming more difficult
a type to procure. Very fine, reverse better.
Ex. Spink & Son, with a supporting ticket in place.
