Canute (1016‐35), Penny, Helmet type (c.1024‐1030), London mint, moneyer Athelgeat, pointed helmet
bust left with sceptre in front, legend surrounding at 1 o'clock, CNVT R•EX ΛNG. Rev, short voided
cross with pellet and annulet centre, pellet in annulet in each angle, all within linear circle, reads
+ÆL•EGET ON LVNDE, 1.00g (S.1158; N.787; BMC XIV; SCBI 14 [Copenhagen, Part IIIb], 1968). A
well‐proportioned example on a broad flan with the outer rims visible, dusky grey toning with underlying amber
mint lustre evenly distributed across the flan. Considerably well struck, especially accurate in the lower drapery
bars, pellet fasteners and portrait. Soft point in legends at 9 o'clock, reflected on reverse from initial strike. Reverse,
little die clash presenting in the centre, legends clear. A lesser seen moneyer. Extremely fine, much eye appeal.
Bought 'Format' August 2001, with an old dealers ticket.
