Canute (1016‐35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029‐35/36), Hertford Mint, moneyer Leofric, diademed
bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNV•T REX:. Rev, voided short cross, within
linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +L•EORIC ON HE•ORT, 1.16g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI;
SCBI 13 [Copenhagen, Part IIIa], 1220 same dies). Struck on a full flan, fully centred, evenly toned with
pronounced amber gold surfaces, dies marginally worn in places. Nevertheless, free of peckmarks with a pleasing
portrait. Considered as a scarcer mint town for the type in Hertfordshire. Definitive very fine, scarce.
