William I (1066-87), Penny, Sword type, London mint, moneyer Godwine, crowned and draped bust
facing, holding sword in right hand breaking linear circle, legend surrounds +PILLELM REX. Rev,
cross pattée over quadrilateral with incurved sides, fleury at angles, contained within inner circle, reads
+GODPINE ON LVNDI, the ND ligate, 1.20g (S.1255; N.846; SCBI 16 [Norweb], 228; SCBI 20 [Mack],
1394). Light grey cabinet tone, free from any surface markings, comprehensive depiction of King with sword,
obverse die marginally worn, legends clear. Reverse, excellent, one die flaw running from the P in moneyers name
to the cross pattée. Very fine, reverse better, rare. A desirable and sought after type within the series.
