Chile - 2 Reales 1822, Silver, REPUBLIC, EMERGENCY COINAGE, VALDIVIA Chunimpa mint. Value / V · A / year. Rev. stars around column.KM. 2; Cal. 989.Valdiva, a prosperous colonial city, was heavily looted during the struggle for independence. As a result, the governor was forced to collect silver items from residents in order to make coins. Approximately 4000 ounces of silver was sent to the Chunimpa estate where the denominations 1, 2 and 8 Reales were struck under supervision of Don Antonio Adriazola. These emergency issues were unofficial and did not possess the correct weight for their value, so the Chilean government had them recalled and melted. Surviving specimens are thus quite rare.
