Russia - 5 Kopecks 1793 EM (1797), Copper, CATHERINE II The Great 1762–1796 Moscow or Nizhny Novgorod mint. Monogram between date. Rev. crowned double-headed eagle.Brekke 10; Bitkin 101; KM. 59.5.In 1797 Paul I decided to revert the already overstruck coinage of his predecessor Catharina II back to their original value. In this instance it concerns a 5 Kopecks that Catharina II had revalued to 10 Kopecks, yet has finally been reverted to a 5 Kopecks. Due to a local die shortage the mints at Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod had to import dies from the St. Petersburg mint, both with and without the EM mint mark.Struck over a 10 Kopecks of Catharina II using older dies.
