Portugal Banco de Portugal 500 Escudos 17.11.1922 Pick 130 PMG About Uncirculated 50. High denomination Portuguese issues are scarce no matter the type. This 500 Reis is rare but also has a story. Portuguese forger Alves Reis created a fraudulent purchase order for 200,000 pieces of this banknote from printer Waterlow & Sons. The notes were printed in England and delivered to Lisbon and many were issued before the scam was discovered. Of importance, this note on offer here is from the original, genuine print run, and it is not a note from the forged purchase order. Only minimal circulation and even toning stains are mentioned for accuracy. Better than average and very scarce, especially in this grade.
