ITALY. Bruttium. Hipponion. AR Stater (7.73 gms), ca. 300-250 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Edge Marks.
cf. HGC-1, 1397. Obverse: Pegasos springing left from ground line; Reverse: Helmeted head of Athena right. Very boldly struck and highly attractive, this specimen stands as a VERY RARE issue with an uncertain attribution. Though given to Hipponion, it is different from the known types there, in that it features an exergual ground line rather than a kerykeion. One other such example in NAC 33 (April 2006) was tentatively given to Hipponion, but suggested an attribution to somewhere other than Magna Graecia. No matter its true place of original, a very difficult type.
Estimate: $750 - $1500
