Diameter: 50mm. By R. Rozet. Commemorating the death of the first president of the Argentine Republic. Obverse: Veiled personification of Argentina standing facing, holding wreath and resting elbow upon medallion with portrait of Mitre; depiction of Mitre on horseback to left; tree to right; in background, plinth inscribed PRIUS QUAM / SCRIBERET / FECIT / HISTORIAM in four lines; Reverse: Personification of Argentina kneeling upon Mitre's grave, grieving; various different effigies behind; in background to left, funerary procession through the streets of Buenos Aires; GLORIA TUA GLORIAMUR on banner curling below. Olive-brown surfaces, with some hints of burgundy sprinkled throughout.

Born in Buenos Aires to a family originally named Mitropoulos and of Greek descent, Bartolomé Mitre Martínez wrote and fought for liberal causes in the southern half of South America, gaining stature and eventually serving as governor of Buenos Aires. Following that, he achieved a national unification and served as the first president of the Republic of Argentina in 1862, and also founded one of South America's leading newspapers, La Nación, in 1870.
