Mont-1336. Struck to commemorate the Grand Alliance victory during the War of the Spanish Succession in which the Franco-Spanish army was forced to abandon its siege of Barcelona. Armored bust right, legend around; Reverse: Bay view depicting the siege, city in the background; legend above; three line inscription in exergue. This decent looking example exhibits bold high-relief devices with even wear and rich mottled patina.
The siege Barcelona coincided with a major solar eclipse, which is mentioned in the lower reverse inscription. This eclipse known contemporarily as the "Eclipse of the Sun King" as it marked the defeat of Louis XIV, the "Sun King" of France.
