BELGIUM. Brussels International Exposition Bronze Plaque, 1935. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED Details. Cleaned.
Dimensions: 79mm x 65mm; Weight: 186.26 gms. By A. Bonnetain for Fonson. Obverse: Four winged personifications: Talent (holding candle), Intelligence (holding open book), Art (holding sculpture), and Industry (holding wheel) alighting left; cityscape of Brussels in the background; in two lines in exergue, EXPOSITION UNIVERSle / ET INTERNATIONALE - ALGEMEENE WERELD / TENTOONSTELLING; Reverse: SCIENTIÆ LABORI ARTIBVS (for science, labor, and the arts), Fama flying right, head facing, holding wreath, palm frond, and open wreath; rectangular cartouche below. Edge: J FONSON and a few spots. Glossy yellow-bronze surfaces, with some hairlines and light rub on the highpoints. A charming Art Deco piece.

The theme for the 1935 Exposition was Transportation, as it celebrated the 100th anniversary of Belgium's first railway system. Various allegories for the different modes of transportation decorated with expo's buildings, and the participating countries revisited the progress made during the previous century with respect to transport.
