GERMANY. Empire. Cologne Cathedral Bronze Medal, 1880. NGC MS-64 Brown.
Wurzbach-2675. Diameter: 50mm. By Drentwett. Commemorating the completion of the Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral). Obverse: DER DOM ZU KÖLN, BEGONNEN 1248, VOLLENDET 1880, façade of the cathedral; floral scroll in exergue; Reverse: Nativity scene featuring the adoration of the magi; in two lines in exergue, "Anbetung der hl. drei Könige" /DOMBILD ZU CÖLN. Rich red-brown surfaces, with a good deal of brilliance in the fields.

Declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1996, the Cologne Cathedral stands as the tallest twin-spired church in the world at 515 feet high. This medal commemorates the completion of the towers (which would finally occur here in 1880), as work had been stalled since the late 15th century.
