NETHERLANDS. Dutch Republic - Caribbean - Great Britain - United States. Death of Rear-Admiral Willem Krul/Capture of St. Eustatius Silver Medal, 1781. NGC Unc Details--Polished.
Betts-581; van Loon-556. Diameter: 45mm. By Holtzhey. Obverse: Bust facing slightly right, in naval regalia; Reverse: Hermes/Mercury (representing Commerce) standing facing to right, in attitude of mourning, covering face with cloth and both caduceus; at center, plinth surmounted by draped urn and bearing depiction of naval battle; shield, cannon, anchor, and flag to left; lone ship upon the seas in the background. Steely gray and with a bright, flashy nature from the noted polishing, this example serves a great type relating to the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War and, by extension, the final period of the Revolutionary War on the American mainland.

The island of St. Eustatius, southeast of the Virgin Islands and northwest of Saint Kitts, was later retaken by the Dutch toward the end of that year, with the American Revolutionary War having ended a few months prior. British side interests in the island kept forces from joining Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis in a more timely fashion, with him ultimately surrendering to George Washington at Yorktown.

Ex: Rudman Collection.

Estimate: $200 - $400
