UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Columbus/Declaration of Independence White Metal Medal, 1893. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.
Eglit-36A; Rulau-X9. Diameter: 58mm. By R. Lovett and Boldenweck & Co. Obverse: SIGNING OF DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE / JULY 4th 1776, scene featuring the signing of the independence, as depicted in John Trumbull's painting; below, eagle, with wings spread and head right, standing facing upon Union shield; banner behind reading WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION; busts of Christopher Columbus and George Washington to left and right; CHICAGO below; Reverse: DISCOVERY OF AMERICA / DEC. 1620 / LANDING OF THE PILGRIMS, panels composed of landing scenes-above: erection of a cross and subjugation of Native Americans; below: ships arriving coastline. Edge: BOLDENWECK & CO / PAT'D OCT. 7 1890. Exceedingly attractive and brilliant, and VERY RARE as such in this medal that is often encountered with issues, dullness, and rim nicks.

During the lead-up to the quadricentennial of Columbus's initial contact with the New World, numerous medals were designed and struck, both in the United States-in conjunction with the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago-and abroad, sometimes for this event or for similar others. In the case here, the birth of the United States is evoked through images of George Washington and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Estimate: $60 - $100
