UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Sweden - United States. New Sweden/Founding of Colonial Delaware Silver Medal, 1988. Royal Swedish (Eskilstuna) Mint. GEM UNCIRCULATED.
Rulau-Unlisted. Diameter: 45mm; Weight: 52.07 gms. By E. Nordin. Mintage: 600. Commemorating the 350th Anniversary of the Founding of New Sweden along the Delaware River. Obverse: DELAWARE, facing heads of two Swedish colonists and two Native Americans (Leni Lenape); canoe upon the waters in the background; Reverse: Ship (Kalmar Nyckel) under sail left upon the waters; stars in cloudy sky above. Edge: SILVER 999/1000, 4 hallmarks, "925" and "010." As issued, and rather attractively toned. A seldom seen type with great interest to the collector of colonial American issues, and an exceptional companion piece to the Delaware commemorative half dollar depicting the same ship.

Established during the Thirty Years' War, the colony of New Sweden along the Delaware River lasted for nearly two decades, and served as a Scandinavian outpost in colonial America. Encompassing what is now modern-day Southeast Pennsylvania, Southwest New Jersey, and Northern Delaware, numerous locales convey this Swedish history, such as Fort Christina, Fort Casimir, and Swedesboro.

Estimate: $100 - $200
