UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Finland - Sweden - United States. Finish Participation in New Sweden/Founding of Colonial Delaware Bronze Medal, 1988. GEM UNCIRCULATED.
Diameter: 73mm. By H. Häiväoja for Tillander. Commemorating the 350th Anniversary of the Finnish Participation in the Swedish-Finnish Settlement in Delaware. Obverse: DELAWARE 1638, Ship sailing toward wooded shorefront; Reverse: Partially constructed log cabin, from which a rainbow emanates; 1988 to upper right. Edge: FINLAND SOCIETY 1988 13 / TILLANDER. Immensely majestic high relief, with an alluring two-tone appearance; an incredibly weighty and hefty work of art, with the thickness of the rims reaching 16mm in some spots. A seldom seen type with great interest to the collector of colonial American issues.

Though a Swedish venture, the colonial foothold established in what is now Delaware did include some Finnish participation as well. At the time, Finns were subjects of the Swedish crown, and were a large contingent of the eventual settlers. As such, this medal was commissioned in Finland in order to commemorate this role in the colony, paralleling the Swedish and American commemoratives in 1988.

Estimate: $75 - $150
