MUSICA IN NUMMIS. Germany. Joseph Haydn Bronze Medal, ND (ca. 1860). UNCIRCULATED.
Niggl-891. Diameter: 65mm; weight: 91.23 gms. By O. G. Steinbock. Obverse: Bust right in frock coat; Reverse: God seated facing, extending arms; sun to left, moon to right; stars around; all within wreath. Edge: Plain. A very engaging type with an interesting reverse motif, this specimen presents deep olive-brown surfaces and solid relief on the portrait.

Known today as the "Father of the Symphony," Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was born in Rohrau in the Holy Roman Empire, and was seemingly at the center of the musical world at the time, being both a friend and mentor to Mozart, as well as a teacher to Beethoven. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music and, during the majority of his career, he was the most famous European composer.

Estimate: $75 - $150
