MUSICA IN NUMMIS. Austria - Belgium - Czechoslovakia - Germany. Trio of Medals (3 Pieces), 1916-87. Grade Range: CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED to GEM UNCIRCULATED.
1) Belgium. Albert I/Etterbeek Brass Band Gilt Bronze Award Medal. Issued 1916 in recognition of 25 years of service. Diameter: 51mm; Weight: 48.42 gms. By A. Michaux. Obverse: ALBERT ROI DES BELGES, uniformed and mantled bust left; Reverse: Central medallion containing ETTERBEEK / SOCIÉTE / ROYALE DE / FANFARES / 'L' AURORE' / 1891 - 1916 / RECONNAISSANCE in seven lines; wreath, open music book, and songbird above; various other instruments. Edge: Some light solder and file marks are 12h from a removed clasp; otherwise plain. UNCIRCULATED details. Brilliant yellow surfaces, though some scattered hairlines are noted on the obverse.

2) Germany. Friedrich Silcher Oval Bronze Medal. Issued 1956. Commemorating the 14th Annual Deutsche Sängerbund (German Singers' Association) in Stuttgart. Dimensions: 63mm x 79mm; Weight: 122.77 gms. Obverse: FRIEDRICH SILCHER, bust facing slightly right within laurel wreath; Reverse: 14. DEUTCHES SÄNGER-BUNDES / -STUTTGART-, stylized S (logo of the Sängerbund); lines of music above, 19 - 56 across field. Edge: Plain. Niggl-3718. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. Warm bronze surfaces, a few scattered marks; with clasp and chord.

An important folksong collector and composer, Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860) was born in Schnait in the German Duchy of Württemberg. He served as musical director at the University of Tübingen and arranged numerous folk songs popular not only in Germany, but internationally as well. 3) Austria - Czechoslovakia. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bronze Medal. Issued 1987. Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of his visit to Strahov in Praha (Prague). Diameter: 70mm; Weight: 146.15 gms. By M. Knobloch. Obverse: W A MOZART 1756-1791, bust left; Reverse: JUBILEUM VARHANNI IMPROVIZACE W A MOZARTA NA STRAHOVĚ, skyline of Praha, with stylized organ piano in the foreground. Edge: Plain. GEM UNCIRCULATED. Pleasing yellow-brown matte surfaces.

One of the most famous and prodigious composers in history, Mozart (1756-1791), was born Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart in the Archbishopric of Salzburg in Austria. At an extremely young age, he showed immense talent with both the keyboard and the violin, and was performing in front of royalty from the age of five. During his rather short life, he composed hundreds of works which have continued to generate a massive influence even to this day.
